Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei

Parshaoit Vayakhel/Pekudei

Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei is our first double portion. The 22nd reading Vayakhel וַיַּקְהֵ֣ל and the 23rd reading Pekudei פְקוּדֵ֤י are combined to create our first double reading. This is typical during a normal reading cycle. This week’s reading brings us to the conclusion of the book of Exodus (Shemot).

Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei Summary

In parsha Vayakhel, we begin with Moses assembling the entire Israelite community and he provides instructions about lighting a fire on the Sabbath. From here he provides the instructions on the collection of the materials for the Mishkan (Tabernacle). Afterwords, he  selects Betzalel and Chur as the architects for the construction of the mishkan.

Parsha Vayakhel begins with an accounting of the all the materials donated for the construction of the Mishkan. Next we see the creation of the ephod, breastplate, robes and other vestments including the headplate for the high priest. Moses is commanded to erect the mishkan on the first day of the first month. We see it erected and all the items placed in their proper order. We see the cloud of God’s glory descend and ascend.

Exo 35:4  And Moses spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: ‘This is the thing which the LORD commanded, saying:
Exo 35:5  Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD, whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, the LORD’S offering: gold, and silver, and brass;
Exo 35:6  and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair;
Exo 35:7  and rams’ skins dyed red, and sealskins, and acacia-wood;

Exo 35:10  And let every wise-hearted man among you come, and make all that the LORD hath commanded:
Exo 35:11  the tabernacle, its tent, and its covering, its clasps, and its boards, its bars, its pillars, and its sockets;
Exo 35:12  the ark, and the staves thereof, the ark-cover, and the veil of the screen;

Exo 35:20  And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.
Exo 35:21  And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and brought the LORD’S offering, for the work of the tent of meeting, and for all the service thereof, and for the holy garments.
Exo 35:22  And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing-hearted, and brought nose-rings, and ear-rings, and signet- rings, and girdles, all jewels of gold; even every man that brought an offering of gold unto the LORD.

Exo 36:6  And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying: ‘Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary.’ So the people were restrained from bringing.
Exo 36:7  For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
Exo 36:8  And every wise-hearted man among them that wrought the work made the tabernacle with ten curtains: of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim the work of the skilful workman made he them.

Exo 39:39  the brazen altar, and its grating of brass, its staves, and all its vessels, the laver and its base;
Exo 39:40  the hangings of the court, its pillars, and its sockets, and the screen for the gate of the court, the cords thereof, and the pins thereof, and all the instruments of the service of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting;
Exo 39:41  the plaited garments for ministering in the holy place; the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest’s office.
Exo 39:42  According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did all the work.
Exo 39:43  And Moses saw all the work, and, behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, even so had they done it. And Moses blessed them.

Exodus (Shemot) 40.1-38 (Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei , Aliyah 7)

Exo 40:1  And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
Exo 40:2  ‘On the first day of the first month shalt thou rear up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.
Exo 40:3  And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and thou shalt screen the ark with the veil.
Exo 40:4  And thou shalt bring in the table, and set in order the bread that is upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof.
Exo 40:5  And thou shalt set the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the screen of the door to the tabernacle.
Exo 40:6  And thou shalt set the altar of burnt-offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.
Exo 40:7  And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and shalt put water therein.
Exo 40:8  And thou shalt set up the court round about, and hang up the screen of the gate of the court.
Exo 40:9  And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the furniture thereof; and it shall be holy.
Exo 40:10  And thou shalt anoint the altar of burnt-offering, and all its vessels, and sanctify the altar; and the altar shall be most holy.
Exo 40:11  And thou shalt anoint the laver and its base, and sanctify it.
Exo 40:12  And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tent of meeting, and shalt wash them with water.
Exo 40:13  And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments; and thou shalt anoint him, and sanctify him, that he may minister unto Me in the priest’s office.
Exo 40:14  And thou shalt bring his sons, and put tunics upon them.
Exo 40:15  And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto Me in the priest’s office; and their anointing shall be to them for an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.’
Exo 40:16  Thus did Moses; according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.
Exo 40:17  And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up.
Exo 40:18  And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and laid its sockets, and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up its pillars.
Exo 40:19  And he spread the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 40:20  And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the ark-cover above upon the ark.
Exo 40:21  And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 40:22  And he put the table in the tent of meeting, upon the side of the tabernacle northward, without the veil.
Exo 40:23  And he set a row of bread in order upon it before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 40:24  And he put the candlestick in the tent of meeting, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.
Exo 40:25  And he lighted the lamps before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 40:26  And he put the golden altar in the tent of meeting before the veil;
Exo 40:27  and he burnt thereon incense of sweet spices; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 40:28  And he put the screen of the door to the tabernacle.
Exo 40:29  And the altar of burnt-offering he set at the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered upon it the burnt-offering and the meal-offering; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 40:30  And he set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water therein, wherewith to wash;
Exo 40:31  that Moses and Aaron and his sons might wash their hands and their feet thereat;
Exo 40:32  when they went into the tent of meeting, and when they came near unto the altar, they should wash; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 40:33  And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So Moses finished the work.

Exo 40:34  Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
Exo 40:35  And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of meeting, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. –
Exo 40:36  And whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys.
Exo 40:37  But if the cloud was not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.
Exo 40:38  For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and there was fire therein by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. –

1 Kings 7.51-8.21 (Ash) | 1 Kings 7.40-50 (Sep)

1 Kings 7.40-51 (Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei, Halftorah)

1Ki 7:40 And Hiram made the pots, and the shovels, and the basins. So Hiram made an end of doing all the work that he wrought for king Solomon in the house of the LORD:
1Ki 7:41  the two pillars, and the two bowls of the capitals that were on the top of the pillars; and the two networks to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were on the top of the pillars;
1Ki 7:42  and the four hundred pomegranates for the two networks, two rows of pomegranates for each network, to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were upon the top of the pillars;
1Ki 7:43  and the ten bases, and the ten lavers on the bases;
1Ki 7:44  and the one sea, and the twelve oxen under the sea;
1Ki 7:45  and the pots, and the shovels, and the basins; even all these vessels, which Hiram made for king Solomon, in the house of the LORD, were of burnished brass.
1Ki 7:46  In the plain of the Jordan did the king cast them, in the clay ground between Succoth and Zarethan.
1Ki 7:47  And Solomon left all the vessels unweighed, because they were exceeding many; the weight of the brass could not be found out.
1Ki 7:48  And Solomon made all the vessels that were in the house of the LORD: the golden altar, and the table whereupon the showbread was, of gold;
1Ki 7:49  and the candlesticks, five on the right side, and five on the left, before the Sanctuary, of pure gold; and the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs, of gold;
1Ki 7:50  and the cups, and the snuffers, and the basins, and the pans, and the fire-pans, of pure gold; and the hinges, both for the doors of the inner house, the most holy place, and for the doors of the house, that is, of the temple, of gold.
1Ki 7:51  Thus all the work that king Solomon wrought in the house of the LORD was finished. And Solomon brought in the things which David his father had dedicated, the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, and put them in the treasuries of the house of the LORD.

1 Kings 8.1-21 (Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei, Halftorah)

1Ki 8:1 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the princes of the fathers’ houses of the children of Israel, unto king Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion.
1Ki 8:2  And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the feast, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.
1Ki 8:3  And all the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark.
1Ki 8:4  And they brought up the ark of the LORD, and the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the Tent; even these did the priests and the Levites bring up.
1Ki 8:5  And king Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, that could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
1Ki 8:6  And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto its place, into the Sanctuary of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubim.
1Ki 8:7  For the cherubim spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim covered the ark and the staves thereof above.
1Ki 8:8  And the staves were so long that the ends of the staves were seen from the holy place, even before the Sanctuary; but they could not be seen without; and there they are unto this day.
1Ki 8:9  There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel when they came out of the land of Egypt.
1Ki 8:10  And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,
1Ki 8:11  so that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.

1Ki 8:12  Then spoke Solomon: The LORD hath said that He would dwell in the thick darkness.
1Ki 8:13  I have surely built Thee a house of habitation, a place for Thee to dwell in for ever.
1Ki 8:14  And the king turned his face about, and blessed all the congregation of Israel; and all the congregation of Israel stood.
1Ki 8:15  And he said: ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who spoke with His mouth unto David my father, and hath with His hand fulfilled it, saying:
1Ki 8:16  Since the day that I brought forth My people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house, that My name might be there; but I chose David to be over My people Israel.
1Ki 8:17  Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
1Ki 8:18  But the LORD said unto David my father: Whereas it was in thy heart to build a house for My name, thou didst well that it was in thy heart;
1Ki 8:19  nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house for My name.
1Ki 8:20  And the LORD hath established His word that He spoke; for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
1Ki 8:21  And there have I set a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, which He made with our fathers, when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.’

Ez.45.16-46.18 (Ash) | Ez. 45. 18-46.15 (Sep)

Ez. 45.16 – 25 (Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei, Shabbat HaChodesh)

Eze 45:16  All the people of the land shall give this offering for the prince in Israel.
Eze 45:17  And it shall be the prince’s part to give the burnt-offerings, and the meal-offerings, and the drink-offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths, in all the appointed seasons of the house of Israel; he shall prepare the sin-offering, and the meal-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings, to make atonement for the house of Israel.
Eze 45:18  Thus saith the Lord GOD: In the first month, in the first day of the month, thou shalt take a young bullock without blemish; and thou shalt purify the sanctuary.
Eze 45:19  And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin-offering, and put it upon the door-posts of the house, and upon the four corners of the settle of the altar, and upon the posts of the gate of the inner court.
Eze 45:20  And so thou shalt do on the seventh day of the month for every one that erreth, and for him that is simple; so shall ye make atonement for the house.
Eze 45:21  In the first month, in the fourteenth day of the month, ye shall have the passover; a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten.
Eze 45:22  And upon that day shall the prince prepare for himself and for all the people of the land a bullock for a sin-offering.
Eze 45:23  And the seven days of the feast he shall prepare a burnt-offering to the LORD, seven bullocks and seven rams without blemish daily the seven days; and a he-goat daily for a sin-offering.
Eze 45:24  And he shall prepare a meal-offering, an ephah for a bullock, and an ephah for a ram, and a hin of oil to an ephah.
Eze 45:25  In the seventh month, in the fifteenth day of the month, in the feast, shall he do the like the seven days; to the sin-offering as well as the burnt-offering, and the meal-offering as well as the oil.

Ez. 46.1-18 (Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei, Shabbat HaChodesh)

Eze 46:1  Thus saith the Lord GOD: The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath day it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.
Eze 46:2  And the prince shall enter by the way of the porch of the gate without, and shall stand by the post of the gate, and the priests shall prepare his burnt-offering and his peace-offerings, and he shall worship at the threshold of the gate; then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be shut until the evening.
Eze 46:3  Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of that gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons.
Eze 46:4  And the burnt-offering that the prince shall offer unto the LORD shall be in the sabbath day six lambs without blemish and a ram without blemish;
Eze 46:5  and the meal-offering shall be an ephah for the ram, and the meal-offering for the lambs as he is able to give, and a hin of oil to an ephah.
Eze 46:6  And in the day of the new moon it shall be a young bullock without blemish; and six lambs, and a ram; they shall be without blemish;
Eze 46:7  and he shall prepare a meal-offering, an ephah for the bullock, and an ephah for the ram, and for the lambs according as his means suffice, and a hin of oil to an ephah.
Eze 46:8  And when the prince shall enter, he shall go in by the way of the porch of the gate, and he shall go forth by the way thereof.
Eze 46:9  But when the people of the land shall come before the LORD in the appointed seasons, he that entereth by the way of the north gate to worship shall go forth by the way of the south gate; and he that entereth by the way of the south gate shall go forth by the way of the north gate; he shall not return by the way of the gate whereby he came in, but shall go forth straight before him.
Eze 46:10  And the prince, when they go in, shall go in in the midst of them; and when they go forth, they shall go forth together.
Eze 46:11  And in the feasts and in the appointed seasons the meal-offering shall be an ephah for a bullock, and an ephah for a ram, and for the lambs as he is able to give, and a hin of oil to an ephah.
Eze 46:12  And when the prince shall prepare a freewill-offering, a burnt-offering or peace-offerings as a freewill-offering unto the LORD, one shall open for him the gate that looketh toward the east, and he shall prepare his burnt-offering and his peace-offerings, as he doth on the sabbath day; then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate.
Eze 46:13  And thou shalt prepare a lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt-offering unto the LORD daily; morning by morning shalt thou prepare it.
Eze 46:14  And thou shalt prepare a meal-offering with it morning by morning, the sixth part of an ephah, and the third part of a hin of oil, to moisten the fine flour: a meal-offering unto the LORD continually by a perpetual ordinance.
Eze 46:15  Thus shall they prepare the lamb, and the meal-offering, and the oil, morning by morning, for a continual burnt-offering.
Eze 46:16  Thus saith the Lord GOD: If the prince give a gift unto any of his sons, it is his inheritance, it shall belong to his sons; it is their possession by inheritance.
Eze 46:17  But if he give of his inheritance a gift to one of his servants, it shall be his to the year of liberty; then it shall return to the prince; but as for his inheritance, it shall be for his sons.
Eze 46:18 Moreover the prince shall not take of the people’s inheritance, to thrust them wrongfully out of their possession; he shall give inheritance to his sons out of his own possession; that My people be not scattered every man from his possession.’

Hebrews 8:1-12 (Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei, Renewed Covenant)

Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
Heb 8:2  A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
Heb 8:3  For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.
Heb 8:4  For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
Heb 8:5  Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
Heb 8:6  But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Heb 8:7  For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
Heb 8:8  For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
Heb 8:9  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
Heb 8:10  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
Heb 8:11  And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
Heb 8:12  For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

Hebrews 9:1-12 (Parshaiot Vayakhel-Pekudei, Renewed Covenant)

Heb 9:1  Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.
Heb 9:2  For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.
Heb 9:3  And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;
Heb 9:4  Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
Heb 9:5  And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.
Heb 9:6  Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.
Heb 9:7  But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
Heb 9:8  The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
Heb 9:9  Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;
Heb 9:10  Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

Heb 9:11  But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
