Parsha Pinchas (Pinechas)

Parsha Pinchas

Parsha Pinchas פִּינְחָס is the forty-first parsha in the annual reading cycle and the eighth reading in Bamidbar (Numbers). I have discovered four ways to spell it – Pinechas, Pinchas, Pinhas, or Pin’has .

Pinchas פִּינְחָס is the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron; Aaron’s grandson in today’s vernacular. His name is of uncertain origin. Yoel HaLevi, Bible historian and Orthodox Jew, states in his podcast, “Pinchas is a unique name and some people link these name to Egyptian names (He is discussing several names)….. What is very interesting here is the Egyptian names continued in the house of the priests. We see generations later in the house of Eli the name Pinchas shows up again and actually relates to maintaining certain names in the family.

Pinchas פִּינְחָס is the sixth word (counting the hyphenated words as two words) and the first distinctive word in the Hebrew text (see text below).

Num 29:39  These ye shall offer unto the LORD in your appointed seasons, beside your vows, and your freewill-offerings, whether they be your burnt-offerings, or your meal-offerings, or your drink-offerings, or your peace-offerings.
Num 29:40  (30:1) And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.

1 Kings 18.46 (Parsha Pinchas, Haftarah)

1 Ki 18:46  And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

1 Kings 19.1-21 (Parsha Pinchas, Haftarah)

1Ki 19:1  And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
1Ki 19:2  Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying: ‘So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.’
1Ki 19:3  And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
1Ki 19:4  But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom-tree; and he requested for himself that he might die; and said: ‘It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.’

1Ki 19:5  And he lay down and slept under a broom-tree; and, behold, an angel touched him, and said unto him: ‘Arise and eat.’
1Ki 19:6  And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the hot stones, and a cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
1Ki 19:7  And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said: ‘Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.’
1Ki 19:8  And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meal forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

1Ki 19:9  And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said unto him: ‘What doest thou here, Elijah?’

1Ki 19:10  And he said: ‘I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.’

1Ki 19:11  And He said: ‘Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD.’ And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake;
1Ki 19:12  and after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
1Ki 19:13  And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said: ‘What doest thou here, Elijah?’

1Ki 19:14  And he said: ‘I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.’

1Ki 19:15  And the LORD said unto him: ‘Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus; and when thou comest, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Aram;
1Ki 19:16  and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
1Ki 19:17  And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
1Ki 19:18  Yet will I leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.’

1Ki 19:19  So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth; and Elijah passed over unto him, and cast his mantle upon him.
1Ki 19:20  And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said: ‘Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee.’ And he said unto him: ‘Go back; for what have I done to thee?’
1Ki 19:21  And he returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

Jeremiah 1:1-19 (Parsha Pinchas, Haftarah)

Jer 1:1  The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,
Jer 1:2  to whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
Jer 1:3  It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
The Call of Jeremiah

Jer 1:4  And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:

Jer 1:5  Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee; I have appointed thee a prophet unto the nations.

Jer 1:6  Then said I: ‘Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak; for I am a child.’

Jer 1:7  But the LORD said unto me: say not: I am a child; for to whomsoever I shall send thee thou shalt go, and whatsoever I shall command thee thou shalt speak.

Jer 1:8  Be not afraid of them; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

Jer 1:9  Then the LORD put forth His hand, and touched my mouth; and the LORD said unto me: Behold, I have put My words in thy mouth;

Jer 1:10  See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out and to pull down, and to destroy and to overthrow; to build, and to plant.

Jer 1:11  Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying: ‘Jeremiah, what seest thou?’ And I said: ‘I see a rod of an almond-tree.’

Jer 1:12  Then said the LORD unto me: ‘Thou hast well seen; for I watch over My word to perform it.’

Jer 1:13  And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying: ‘What seest thou?’ And I said: ‘I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is from the north.’

Jer 1:14  Then the LORD said unto me: ‘Out of the north the evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

Jer 1:15  For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.

Jer 1:16  And I will utter My judgments against them touching all their wickedness; in that they have forsaken me, and have offered unto other gods, and worshipped the work of their own hands.

Jer 1:17  Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee; be not dismayed at them, lest I dismay thee before them.

Jer 1:18  For, behold, I have made thee this day a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.

Jer 1:19  And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.’

Jeremiah 2:1-3 (Parsha Pinchas, Haftarah)

Jer 2:1  And the word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Jer 2:2  Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying: Thus saith the LORD: I remember for thee the affection of thy youth, the love of thine espousals; how thou wentest after Me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
Jer 2:3  Israel is the LORD’S hallowed portion, His first-fruits of the increase; all that devour him shall be held guilty, evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.

John 2:13-25 (Parsha Pinchas, Renewed Covenant)

Joh 2:13  The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Joh 2:14  In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.
Joh 2:15  And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.
Joh 2:16  And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”
Joh 2:17  His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Joh 2:18  So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”

Joh 2:19  Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

Joh 2:20  The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”
Joh 2:21  But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Joh 2:22  When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Joh 2:23  Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.
Joh 2:24  But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people
Joh 2:25  and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
