Parsha Bamidbar

Parsha Bamidbar

Parsha Bamidbar is translated as “in the wilderness”.  It’s the thirty-fourth Torah reading in the annual reading cycle and first in sefer Bamidbar, the book of Numbers. I found five different spellings – “Bemidbar”, “BeMidbar”, “B’midbar”, “Bamidbar”, or “Bamidbor”.

Parsha Bamidbar Summary

Parsha Bemidbar begins with the YHVH telling Moses to conduct a census of the tribes, but the Levites must be exempted. He also provides the information about the encampments around the tabernacle (mishkan). YHVH gives the instructions to the Levites on their services in the mishkan. We discover the redemption of the first-born. It closes with the specific duties of the Kohathites.

Bemidbar בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר is the fifth word and in the Hebrew text (see text below). The hyphenated word is counted as two words.

Num 4:7  And upon the table of showbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls and the cups wherewith to pour out; and the continual bread shall be thereon:
Num 4:8  and they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof.
Num 4:9  And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and its lamps, and its snuffers, and its snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:
Num 4:10  and they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it upon the frame.
Num 4:11  And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof:
Num 4:12  and they shall take all the vessels of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of sealskin, and shall put them on the frame.
Num 4:13  And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:
Num 4:14  and they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, the firepans, the flesh-hooks, and the shovels, and the basins, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof.
Num 4:15  And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting.
Num 4:16  And the charge of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the continual meal-offering, and the anointing oil, the charge of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, the sanctuary, and the furniture thereof.
Num 4:17  And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
Num 4:18  Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites;
Num 4:19  but thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden;
Num 4:20  but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.

Hosea 1.10 – 14 (Parsha Bamidbar, Haftarah)

Hos 1:10  (2:1) Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass that, instead of that which was said unto them: ‘Ye are not My people’, it shall be said unto them: ‘Ye are the children of the living God.’
Hos 1:11  (2:2) And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint themselves one head, and shall go up out of the land; for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Hosea 2.1 – 22 (Parsha Bamidbar, Haftarah)

Hos 2:1  (2:3) Say ye unto your brethren: ‘Ammi’; and to your sisters, ‘Ruhamah.’
Hos 2:2  (2:4) Plead with your mother, plead; for she is not My wife, neither am I her husband; and let her put away her harlotries from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts;
Hos 2:3  (2:5) Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.
Hos 2:4  (2:6) And I will not have compassion upon her children; for they are children of harlotry.
Hos 2:5  (2:7) For their mother hath played the harlot, she that conceived them hath done shamefully; for she said: ‘I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.’
Hos 2:6  (2:8) Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and I will make a wall against her, that she shall not find her paths.
Hos 2:7  (2:9) And she shall run after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them, and she shall seek them, but shall not find them; then shall she say: ‘I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.’
Hos 2:8  (2:10) For she did not know that it was I that gave her the corn, and the wine, and the oil, and multiplied unto her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.
Hos 2:9  (2:11) Therefore will I take back My corn in the time thereof, and My wine in the season thereof, and will snatch away My wool and My flax given to cover her nakedness.
Hos 2:10  (2:12) And now will I uncover her shame in the sight of her lovers, and none shall deliver her out of My hand.
Hos 2:11  (2:13) I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feasts, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her appointed seasons.
Hos 2:12  (2:14) And I will lay waste her vines and her fig-trees, whereof she hath said: ‘These are my hire that my lovers have given me’; and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.
Hos 2:13  (2:15) And I will visit upon her the days of the Baalim, wherein she offered unto them, and decked herself with her ear-rings and her jewels, and went after her lovers, and forgot Me, saith the LORD.

Hos 2:14  (2:16) Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly unto her.
Hos 2:15  (2:17) And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she shall respond there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
Hos 2:16  (2:18) And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call Me Ishi, and shalt call Me no more Baali.
Hos 2:17  (2:19) For I will take away the names of the Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be mentioned by their name.
Hos 2:18  (2:20) And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground; and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the land, and will make them to lie down safely.
Hos 2:19  (2:21) And I will betroth thee unto Me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto Me in righteousness, and in justice, and in lovingkindness, and in compassion.
Hos 2:20  (2:22) And I will betroth thee unto Me in faithfulness; and thou shalt know the LORD.

Rom 9.22-33 (Parsha Bamidbar, Renewed Covenant)

Rom 9:22  What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
Rom 9:23  in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory—
Rom 9:24  even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?
Rom 9:25  As indeed he says in Hosea, “Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’”
Rom 9:26  “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”
Rom 9:27  And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved,
Rom 9:28  for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.”
Rom 9:29  And as Isaiah predicted, “If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom and become like Gomorrah.”

Rom 9:30  What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith;
Rom 9:31  but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law.
Rom 9:32  Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,
Rom 9:33  as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
